The higher you go, the fewer people you can think out loud with. Your team reports to you, so you cannot show them the doubt. Your board is assessing you, so you cannot show them the doubt either. Your peers are competing for the same ground. And the person at home has heard about this particular problem for three weeks and would like an evening off. So most senior leaders end up making their most consequential decisions alone, at speed, with nobody to test their thinking against. This hour exists for that. What people bring A board presentation that has to land, and the sense that the real argument has not been found yet. A restructure they have to lead and privately disagree with. A colleague or stakeholder relationship that has become the tax on everything else. An offer on the table, and a decision that cannot be discussed with anyone inside either organisation. A new role, six weeks in, and the quiet suspicion that they were promoted for the wrong strengths. The question of whether to stay at all. How the hour works You send me the situation beforehand, in whatever form is easiest. A paragraph is enough. I will have thought about it before we speak, so we do not spend the first fifteen minutes on background. We start with what is actually going on, which is not always what was written down. Then we work: pressure-testing your reading of the situation, examining the options you have not yet considered, and building the approach you will actually use. I will challenge you. That is most of the value. If you wanted agreement you could get it more cheaply elsewhere. What you leave with A clear read on the situation, including the parts you had not named. A decision or a strategy, with the reasoning behind it, so you can defend it to whoever asks. The specific words for the difficult conversation, if that is what is needed. Written follow-up within twenty-four hours summarising what we agreed and the steps to take. On confidentiality Nothing you bring to this call goes anywhere.
